Whale or dolphin stranding rescue is more than an emergency response to unexpected event, it also calls for ocean awareness to the public. In early 2024, Lucidity people participated the stranding rescue training organized by the Marine Biology and Cetacean Research Center at National Cheng Kung University. Participants shared some learning experiences and insights from this event.

"This course is special and impressive to me." one colleague said. During the training, she learned the basics of stranded whale and dolphin rescue, and personally experienced a simulated rescue operation. It covers broad topics such as the introduction of whale and dolphin ecology, the exploration of stranding causes, and practical rescue drills. These trainings facilitate volunteers to better respond in future stranding incidents.

In the course, volunteers participated the simulated scenario with inflatable whale model. They had to work together to safely move the "stranded" whales and dolphins and learned how to properly report and assist professional teams in such situation. "This simulation helps us understand that every decision we make is critical when dealing with such large marine creatures," one colleague shared. She further explained that emergency response requires not only physical strength but also keeping calm with the relevant. This experience reinforced her sense of responsibility in protecting marine lives.

Another colleague mentioned that the course deepens her understanding of the harmful impact on marine ecosystem. She shared, "Through videos and demonstrations, we realize that whales and dolphins often die from ingesting plastic or becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets. Everyone should intentionally reduce the consumption of plastic products and take more proactive actions on environment protection. Those are the very basic doable in our daily life.”

Learning new knowledge can inspire people perceive things in different way. Through this educational event, sense of mission generates stronger among the volunteers. “We live in an island country, surrounded by the sea, the training project enabled us to realize we really should make change for marine lives and ocean conservation,” one colleague remarked.
